St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish
Our Dearly Departed
The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy during Mass. Servers carry the cross, the processional candle(s), hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, assist him when he receives the gifts from the people, present the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts and any other assistance the priest requires. Altar servers take on additional roles at special Masses such as Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Christmas.
This is a great role for our young people to immerse them in the faith and increase their involvement in the church. At St. Francis parish, anyone who is in grade 4 or older can join this ministry. They will be taught what to do by the altar server coordinator and then placed on a team with experienced altar servers who mentor them until they are comfortable with the tasks they perform.
Altar servers are needed for both Saturday and Sunday Masses and preference is given as to which day they prefer to serve. Schedules are created monthly to facilitate planning and altar servers are asked to sign up for special Masses. Ideally our parish would like to have enough altar servers to accommodate the scheduling needs of all.
If you are interested in this ministry, please contact the office.
